The ruins of Uxmal were presented to me as the homeland, and I considered them now with greater interest than before. I had discovered city ruins in more numbers than I expected, but they were shattered in a way that they could in no way instruct us; whereas here in Uxmal, though hesitating and about to collapse, those living monuments were still standing, more worthy than ever of study and research and which were perhaps the only vestiges that could convey to posterity the image of an American city.
